SMILE LASIK in Seoul: no flap, small incision

SMILE corrects myopia and astigmatism through a small incision instead of a corneal flap. It keeps the corneal surface intact, which suits active lifestyles and people worried about dry eye. Apgujeong Eye Clinic introduced SMILE in 2011.

The procedure

What SMILE does differently

In SMILE, a femtosecond laser creates a lens-shaped piece of tissue inside the cornea. The surgeon removes it through a small side incision, which reshapes the cornea and corrects the prescription.

LASIK cuts a hinged flap across the front of the cornea. SMILE does not, so more of the cornea's strength and nerve supply is preserved. That generally means less disruption to the tear film and no risk of flap displacement from a knock to the eye.

SMILE is often called SMILE LASIK or ReLEx SMILE. Our newest version, SMILE Pro, uses the VisuMax 800 for even shorter laser time.

FAQ

Common questions

Is SMILE better than LASIK?

Neither is better for everyone. SMILE avoids a flap and tends to cause less dry eye; LASIK treats a wider range of prescriptions including hyperopia. Your exam decides.

How long does SMILE take?

The laser itself takes seconds; you are in the operating room for about 10–15 minutes for both eyes.

Can I watch the surgery?

A companion can watch through our glass-walled operating room.

When can I wear makeup or exercise?

Usually after about a week for makeup and light exercise; your surgeon gives exact timing.
